Regional to local sea level change, due to its central societal importance, has been identified by the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) as one of their global challenge research themes in its project CLIVAR. Regional to local sea level change has also become an emerging issue in the recently published Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC (AR5), and, in particular the lack of sufficient understanding that hindered its assessment. The SPP-1889 aims therefore to be at the forefront of sea level impact studies, and will contribute directly and centrally to those international activities. At the same time, it will greatly benefit from international knowledge exchange and program coordination of the WCRP.
